The Ingleside on the Bay Coastal Watch Association (IOBCWA) is a Texas non-profit organization that was formed in 2019 by a group of concerned Ingleside on the Bay (IOB) citizens who are taking action to mitigate negative effects on our bayfront community due to rising sea levels, larger and more frequent ship traffic, and rapid industrialization. Our Little Piece of Paradise

Founded in 1958 and incorporated as a city in 1991, Ingleside on the Bay offers a high quality of life, with its own marina, beach club, restaurants, and laid-back, secluded bayfront lifestyle. While the community lies off the beaten path, the increasing volume and size of ship traffic and build-out of surrounding industries threatens to degrade this quality of life. IOBCWA members include educators, engineers, business owners, elected officials, and others who aim to increase the positive and decrease the negative impacts of the changes underway and yet to come.

Good Fences Make Good Neighbors

Our convenient location on Corpus Christi Bay near the Gulf IntraCoastal Waterway is desirable not only for residents and recreation, but also for industry. Our aim is to develop good relationships with our neighboring industries through open communication, educational opportunities, and shared research. While we trust that our industrial neighbors are following all standards and requirements, we believe it is important to understand the effects of these industries and other changes to our environment - and not be the last to know.

The Good and Bad of Bayside Living

Without question, our location on the sunset-facing side of Corpus Christi Bay is one of our community's biggest assets. However, with our front row seat to Mother Nature, we see first-hand the effects of rising sea levels, seasonal high tides, and tropical storms and hurricanes. In 2017, many homes and boats in IOB were damaged by the wrath of Hurricane Harvey. In 2020, we experienced a 3-4 ft storm surge from Hurricane Hanna. IOBCWA is helping to put in place strategies for resilience, so we will be better-prepared for all hazards. 

A Texas Non-Profit 501(c)(3) Organization

Incorporated as a Texas non-profit on 9/25/19, IOBCWA is working to ensure the resiliency of IOB in the face of these various weather-related and manmade threats. We seek to engage with area industries, universities, and coastal communities to address air and water issues; explore innovative landscaping, architectural, and technological strategies; and pursue grants designed to establish IOB as a model for resilient coastal communities. IOBCWA received 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status as a public charity on December 2, 2019. 

How To File an Environmental Complaint!

​​It's no secret that there's a lot of industrial activity going on around Ingleside on the Bay. It is up to citizens to inform the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) if they see, smell, or hear something that may be harming air and water quality, human health, or wildlife (like dead sea turtles, silted over seagrasses, oily or putrid smells, leaks or explosions). Underway: IOBCWA and member Chon Serna are engaged in a TCEQ Contested Case Hearing opposing the Port of Corpus Christi's application for water rights for a desalination plant on the La Quinta Channel.
